| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium-based alloys have attracted significant attention as lightweight structural materials because of their low density and high specific strength. Among them, Mg–1Zn–0.2Ca alloys offer improved mechanical performance through Zn- and Ca-induced microstructural refinement. In this study, a cast Mg–1Zn–0.2Ca alloy was plane-strain forged at 450°C. Uniaxial compression perpendicular to the forging direction was interrupted at intermediate strains to examine microstructural and texture evolution. Electron backscatter diffraction revealed that the initial off-basal texture strongly influenced deformation, with extension twinning dominating the accommodation of plastic strain. Twin interactions promoted grain reorientation and progressive texture modification. Viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) simulations quantified the relative contributions of slip and twinning systems during deformation. The combined experimental and modeling results clarify how initial texture, twin activity, and microstructural evolution govern strain-hardening behavior in wrought Mg–Zn–Ca alloys effectively. |
