Al-Al3Ni eutectics exhibit outstanding performance for high temperatures applications. A traditional method to study pattern selection in Al-Al3Ni eutectics is directional solidification (DS) of bulk specimens. However, the microstructures achievable by DS are limited by the furnace design, solidification conditions (namely, the thermal gradient and the growth velocity), and the ‘seed’ or template microstructure (itself produced by DS). Here, we developed a novel fabrication method to produce a much larger library of two-phase microstructures within pseudo-2D samples, using physical vapor deposition of Al and Al3Ni lamellae. The partial remelting and subsequent solidification of these deposited samples by DS gives us new fundamental insights on the influence of starting microstructures, including the lamella orientation and spacing, on the solidification behavior of two-phase eutectics. |
