Cerium and cerium alloys exhibit rich sequence of pressure-, temperature-, and deformation-driven phase transformations accessible in laboratory conditions, for studying coupled deformation-and-transformation behavior. Predictive constitutive modeling of such behavior requires phase-resolved, in situ data across independent loading paths. We report integrated in-situ neutron and synchrotron diffraction measurements on Ce and Ce-5Y spanning the strain-rate axis from high-rate Taylor impact through quasi-static tension to hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic diamond anvil cell compression, and in situ heating to probe the reverse transformation. Prior symmetric DAC measurements mapped the high pressure-driven sequence to 30 GPa, including the α, α″ and ε transitions. Here we use time-resolved diffraction to focus on the narrow low-pressure, room-temperature window near the γ, β, and α transformation, where the role of deviatoric stress on transformation rate and pathway remains unclear. These multi-modal data constrain thermo-mechanical constitutive models of cerium alloys and other complex metallic systems undergoing multiple allotropic transitions. |
