| Abstract Scope |
The increasing demand for orthopedic interventions has intensified the need for biomaterials that improve clinical outcomes while reducing revision rates and recovery time. Biodegradable magnesium alloys have emerged as promising candidates for temporary implant applications due to their favorable mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, their clinical adoption is hindered by rapid corrosion in physiological environments. This study will investigate the role of microstructure in corrosion initiation and progression in the WE43 alloy. Corrosion nucleation behavior will be evaluated by real-time monitoring of hydrogen bubble activity under open-circuit and anodic-polarization conditions testing. Phase distribution and localized degradation sites will be characterized using backscattered electron imaging and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and hydrogen activity will be spatially correlated to microstructural features. These findings are expected to clarify phase-dependent corrosion behavior to support the design of magnesium-based biomaterials with tailored degradation. |
