Thermal conditions in advanced energy systems significantly influence the thermodynamic behavior of polycrystalline materials. Specifically, for gas-material interaction applications, such as hydrogen storage, thermal transport properties determine operational efficiency and performance. Predicting effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of porous microstructures under varying gas pressures is therefore critical for system optimization. In this presentation, we present the ETC behaviors in porous microstructures with pore regions between alloy particles across different gas pressures. Our experimental measurements using Hydralloy C5 and La-Ni-Al alloys reveal ETC enhancement with H2 and He pressures. We identify two governing mechanisms driving this ETC enhancement, namely, thermal conduction through gas-filled pores and interfacial thermal conductivity at gas-solid boundaries. We characterize these effects on the pressure-dependent ETC behavior analytically and numerically, which is validated against our experimental measurements. Our findings establish mechanistic frameworks for designing efficient thermal management strategies in H storage and gas-solid interaction energy systems. |
