| Abstract Scope |
Dislocation loop alignment under stress may be responsible for the primary stage of irradiation creep. By combining object kinetic Monte Carlo (OKMC) including elasticity and Frenkel pair accumulation in molecular dynamics (MD), we showed that the loop alignment we saw in electron irradiation comes from variant selection in the early stages of irradiation. OKMC simulations elucidated the key role of A15 clusters, as precursors of dislocation loops under Frenkel pair production regime.
MD simulations of displacement cascades under stress show the selectivity of loop orientation directly at the end of the cascade, thus evidencing loop alignment without having to through the intermediate stage of A15 formation. This direct mechanism should be relevant for ion or neutron irradiations. We also observed that loop creation in the cascades is enhanced under tension or compression, which we explained by the variation with stress of the binding energy of the interstitials forming the loops. |
