| Abstract Scope |
E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute, founded in 1934, is one of Ukraine’s leading research institutions in welding, materials science, and advanced manufacturing technologies. The Institute develops innovative solutions for welding a broad range of materials and structures and conducts research in metallurgy, additive manufacturing (3D printing), construction technologies, and other high-tech areas. Its technologies are widely applied in transportation, aerospace, mechanical engineering, power generation, including nuclear energy, medicine, defense, and national security. PWI’s main research areas include advanced welding and joining technologies, including electron-beam technologies and living tissue welding; welding in the space; underwater welding; pressure welding; magnetically impelled arc butt welding; automation of welding and manufacturing processes; structural strength, reliability, and service life of welded components; nanomaterials and nanotechnologies; surfacing, coating, and surface engineering; special electrometallurgy; mathematical modeling of welding processes; and non-destructive testing and technical diagnostics.
Today, PWI operates as an integrated scientific and engineering complex that includes research laboratories, design and engineering divisions, and pilot production facilities manufacturing welding equipment, consumables, and electrometallurgical systems. The Institute employs approximately 1,000 highly qualified specialists, including 50 professors and 170 PhD holders, working across 35 research divisions.
PWI maintains strong partnerships with leading industrial and academic organizations in Ukraine and internationally. Its partners include globally recognized companies such as Boeing, Plasser; Theurer, Progress Rail Services Corporation, and RW Equipment; Consulting LLC.
With a strong commitment to international scientific collaboration, PWI actively participates in European and global research initiatives and has been involved in numerous projects funded by the European Commission, STCU, and DFG. The Institute is also a member of major international professional organizations, including the International Institute of Welding, European Welding Federation, and American Welding Society. |
