| Abstract Scope |
The study explores microstructure and mechanical properties of Ni-Al2O3 (α) metal matrix composite (MMC) produced by low-pressure cold spray. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed the low porosity (<5.0%) in cold-sprayed Ni-Al2O3, which exhibited high hardness values under Vickers hardness tests (270 HV0.3) and nanoindentation tests (6.2 GPa). Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses revealed ultrafine-grained Ni matrix with abundant twin boundaries, high density (~ 1.1×1015/m2) geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) incurred by severe plastic deformation during cold spray. Basal twins were also detected in coarse-grained Al2O3 particles. Our strengthening mechanism analysis indicates that the high strength of Ni-Al2O3 MMC originates from the addition of Al2O3 particles, high density dislocations and ultrafine grains. This study demonstrates a viable technical route to fabricate high-quality MMCs via cost-effective cold spray method. |
