Abstract Scope |
Refractory metals and alloys hold a unique position in manufactured components. On one hand, their performance in certain environments is singular, but on the other hand the very high cost of both raw metals and fabrication processes is inhibitive. Considerable effort has been dedicated to refractory metals development through US government programs in the context of delivering enhanced materials that enable new systems, improve capability, or sustain existing systems. Several advancements across a spectrum of technical areas will be detailed, including computational materials discovery of refractory metals, cold spray coating and additive build processes, and produced refractory metal microstructures. These technical areas will be interpreted within the context of systems that have already been developed or are in development, with specific applications including rocket motors, rotorcraft erosion caps, novel propulsion, and hypersonic materials applications. |
