| Abstract Scope |
Tool steels such as AISI H13 are commonly used in die casting and forging for their heat resistance, stress resistance, and toughness. But repeated contact under high pressure wears surfaces down, shortening tool life. Laser cladding builds a protective coating layer by layer. Here, a two-layer H13 laser-cladded layer was deposited on H13 substrates under annealed and tempered conditions, and was compared with uncladded substrates. Ball-on-flat dry sliding tests were conducted at loads ranging from 8 to 24 N and frequencies from 2 to 6 Hz to examine how wear behavior shifts with varying contact pressures.
The clad layers consistently exhibited superior performance due to higher hardness. At room temperature, a finer microstructure reduced wear. At high temperatures, oxidation and abrasion take over, but clad samples still outperformed the bare substrate, aided by a protective oxide layer and improved heat resistance. Cladding clearly boosts wear performance for industrial tooling. |
