| Abstract Scope |
The steel production in the electric arc furnace (EAF) is continually growing as more steel is recycled, leading to the generation of large amounts of iron-rich by-products, like mill scale (> 75% wt Fe). The development of sustainable iron recovery methods from mill scale is essential to enhance the circularity of the steel industry. In this study, we investigate the hydrogen-based iron recovery from industrial mill scale pellets, which are mainly composed of iron oxide phases (Fe2O3, Fe3O4, FeO) along with some impurities (Mn, Ca, Si). Hydrogen reduction experiments were performed at 800°C under argon in a lab-scale melting furnace with semicontinuous off-gas micro-GC analysis. Interrupted experiments were done and the specimens were characterized by SEM, EPMA, EBSD and XRD to evaluate metallic iron formation and impurity effects. The results of this study will contribute to the development of new sustainable iron-recovery routes from steelmaking by-products. |
