Titanium alloys are in high demand for aerospace, biomedical, and advanced manufacturing applications, but the conventional production route remains complex and energy-intensive. Although alternative routes have been explored for direct titanium alloy production from precursors, achieving simultaneous reduction, alloying, and chemical homogeneity remains challenging. To address this limitation, we developed a direct reduction and alloying (DRA) strategy in which the precursor is first chemically modified into a TiOₓ-based mixed oxide and then converted directly into titanium alloy powder by hydrogen-assisted magnesiothermic reduction (HAMR). In this work, the feasibility of this approach was demonstrated for Ti–6Al–4V by preparing a chemically modified Ti-Al-V mixed oxide precursor and subsequently reducing it to Ti–Al–V hydride powder. This approach has the potential to reduce processing complexity and support lower-energy production of titanium alloys. |
