Abstract Scope |
LionGlass™, a phosphate-based glass developed at Penn State, offers a sustainable alternative to soda lime silicate (SLS) glass by reducing carbon emissions through lower melting temperatures and the elimination of carbonate raw materials. Effective strategies for incorporating LionGlass™ into established recycling streams are critical for widespread industrial use. To facilitate this integration, two sorting approaches are investigated: optical sorting, which leverages the differences in UV absorbance between LionGlass™ and SLS glass; and elemental sorting, which uses XRF technology to identify and separate LionGlass™ based on its unique elemental composition. However, even with effective sorting, some level of cross-contamination is inevitable, making it essential to understand the implications of mixing LionGlass™ with SLS glass. These efforts aim to enable the integration of LionGlass™ into current recycling systems, advancing the transition to more sustainable glass manufacturing practices. |
