Crystal plasticity models have been available for decades, yet their evolution has resulted in a multitude of disconnected implementations and validation approaches. Most efforts typically involve the identification of numerous parameters from a single macroscopic polycrystalline tensile test. This approach provides limited insight into parameter uncertainty or interdependence. Moreover, different deformation mechanisms or mathematical artefacts can compensate each other, enabling equally good fitting to experimental data but heavily overfitted.
Substructure-sensitive crystal plasticity addressed these limitations by leveraging multiscale validation strategies, enabling independent identification of model parameters and their associated uncertainties. This presentation discusses the application of the strategies to BCC metallic systems, emphasizing both similarities and key differences relative to FCC behavior. We demonstrate that, at the mesoscale, dislocation structures operate in similar fashion across structures. The presentation concludes with perspectives on future developments aimed at enhancing the predictive robustness of material models.
