| Abstract Scope |
Cold spraying of tungsten is a topic of interest for use in plasma-facing components for fusion devices. However, studies on tungsten cold spray are limited because of the hard, brittle, and high-temperature nature of tungsten. Preprocessing the powder using ball milling takes advantage of the unique metallurgical property of tungsten that cold working tungsten increases ductility. Single splat studies were employed to understand the effect of balling milling on the cold spray ability. SEM was used to measure the areal coverage of tungsten particles on the surface. EBSD and TEM was used to establish the effects of ball milling on the deformation behavior and the population and type of dislocations within tungsten powder during the single splat behavior. Preprocessing the tungsten powder through ball milling increased the amount of deformation within the tungsten particles during the cold spray process and increased the tungsten adhesion rate during single-splat cold spray testing. |
