The influence of erbium (Er) addition on the wear and friction behaviour of binary Mg–Er alloys was investigated under dry sliding conditions. As-cast Mg–Er alloys containing 0.5–12 wt.% Er were evaluated under normal loads ranging from 5 to 100 N and sliding speeds of 0.01–0.1 m/s. In addition, significantly improved the tribological performance of magnesium, reducing the severe wear regime by approximately 75% and the friction coefficient by about 40% at higher Er contents. Enhanced wear resistance was attributed to the combined effects of Er-rich precipitate strengthening and the formation of a protective tribo-oxide layer during sliding. The Mg–12Er alloy also exhibited approximately 50% lower surface energy than the lower-Er alloys, reducing adhesive and abrasive wear. Increasing the applied load increased both wear rate and friction, whereas higher sliding speeds reduced wear. Abrasive, adhesive, oxidative, fatigue, plastic deformation, and delamination wear mechanisms were identified. |
