Abstract Scope |
Femtosecond laser machining was used to rapidly produce micro- and meso-scale specimen for tensile testing. F82H, a candidate fusion reactor steel, was tested in a tempered and quenched state. The micromechanical tensile behavior of the steels in the quenched and tempered condition were studied at both the micro- and meso-scale. Specifically, the mechanical behavior relating to the carbide distribution and dislocation density are discussed and how they varied as a function of length scale and grain boundary orientation. The quenched microstructure is important to study due to its presence near welds and potentially formation during rapid heating and cooling events. In total, it was found that both length scales exhibit the similar behavior of significant hardening and ductility decrease following rapid reactor cooling. |
