| Abstract Scope |
Bone is a hierarchical biological material whose mechanical performance is governed by structural and compositional organization across multiple length scales. However, how nanoscale variations in matrix organization contribute to tissue-level mechanical behavior and fracture resistance remains incompletely understood. This presentation will discuss how alterations in collagen-mineral organization influence local mechanical properties, strain localization, and crack propagation. Using osteogenesis imperfecta as a model system, the presentation will illustrate how distinct genetic defects produce mutation-specific changes in bone quality that cannot be captured by conventional measures of bone mass alone. These findings support a multiscale framework linking nanoscale matrix architecture to whole-bone mechanical performance and provide new perspectives for understanding skeletal fragility and evaluating bone quality. |
