Abstract Scope |
We recently explored cold sintering of naturally occurring minerals as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) or cement analogs, which have the potential to transform the traditional high-energy, high-CO2-emission cement manufacturing pathways. Diopside (MgCaSi2O6) and calcite (CaCO3) were used as model systems. We demonstrated that the addition of amorphous silica nanoparticles, which mimic products of leached mine tailings, could enable and promote cold sintering of diopside and calcite under alkali environments. The effect of the relative weight percentage of silica and NaOH concentration were examined. The relative density of the cold sintered composite reached over 90% at 400-500 MPa and 200 °C in 60 min. This series of studies demonstrated and investigated low-temperature densification of silicate and calcite based composites as a route toward sustainable manufacturing of cementitious materials.
