| Abstract Scope |
Model-based qualification and certification (Q&C) of metal additively manufactured (AM) components has the potential to consider part-to-part variability arising from process-induced defects and microstructural heterogeneity. This presentation discusses strategies for calibration, verification, and validation across a new Q&C framework for AM components, with particular emphasis on crystal plasticity models that relate local microstructural features to fatigue crack growth behavior. Here, integrated physics-based models have been developed to leverage cutting-edge in situ sensors to generate unique defect and microstructure twins (DMT) for each printed component, and these DMTs inform microstructure-based lifing (MBL) models to predict lives for each part. Characterization and mechanical testing are used to inform model calibration, to assess predictive capability, and to identify dominant sources of uncertainty. These efforts support the development of credible and practical multiscale models and advance the One Part And Life (OPAL) framework for the model-based Q&C for metal AM components.
