| Abstract Scope |
Hastelloy X is widely used in high-temperature and corrosive environments due to its excellent properties for these applications. For complex part geometries, high hardness and strength of the alloy make conventional manufacturing and machining challenging. Laser beam powder bed fusion (LPBF) offers an effective alternative for producing near-net-shape geometries but typically requires post-build heat treatment to achieve full densification and optimise mechanical properties.
Hastelloy X samples and components were fabricated using LPBF and heat treated via hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Test specimens were built in different print orientations and heat treated through a series of HIP cycles with varying temperatures, pressures, and hold times, with the effect of these parameters on densification, microstructure, and mechanical properties characterised. This paper investigates optimising the microstructural and mechanical properties of LPBF Hastelloy X parts through varying HIP parameters and discusses the relationships between processing parameters, microstructural evolution, and material performance. |
