In-situ high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM) provides rich mesoscale measurements of the micromechanical state of grain level features that offer new opportunities for calibrating and validating crystal plasticity models. Traditionally, crystal plasticity parameters are calibrated by minimizing the error between simulated and experimental results based on the homogenized macroscopic tensile responses. However, HEDM enables access to mesoscale data, allowing model calibration to incorporate both macroscopic and grain-level information. This raises several important questions: How does incorporating HEDM-derived mesoscale information into the calibration of a crystal plasticity model affect the calibrated parameters and the model’s response compared to a calibration based solely on the macroscopic response? Additionally, does the fidelity of the reconstructed microstructure influence the resulting model predictions? In this work, we address these questions by utilizing state-of-the-art Bayesian optimization algorithms within a multi-scale, multi-fidelity calibration framework that leverages HEDM data, incorporating both macroscopic and mesoscale experimental data. |
