| Abstract Scope |
The Gleeble’s capability to rapidly heat/cool samples and carefully control peak temperatures during thermal simulations enables precise kinetic phase transformation studies for metallic materials. Seemingly insignificant boron contents in 304L stainless (10-20 wt ppm), promote the formation of Cr-rich M2¬B borides along delta-ferrite/austenite interphase boundaries, which under specific heat treatment and laser welding conditions, cause cracking in the HAZ. A novel testing methodology was developed combining rapid heating/cooling heat treatments in a Gleeble 3500 thermal-mechanical simulator and laser welding to generate a large array of thermally processed coupons. Utilizing time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), the spatial distribution of boron in the microstructure was correlated to boride dissolution and boron diffusion kinetics. The results were incorporated into a weldability diagram which is utilized for predictions of crack susceptibility for application relevant thermal treatments prior to laser welding.
