| Abstract Scope |
HybriMet LLC has developed metal matrix ceramic composite (MMC), high temperature (750⁰C) capable, corrosion resistant, wear resistant and erosion resistant parts for valves, pumps and tanks and other applications in extreme environments. Since 2018 HybriMet MMC (including NiWC3b and NiWC3b2) have been demonstrated as valve seats, bushings, seals and coatings in molten chloride and fluoride salt pumps and valves.
HybriMet’s MMC technology is an evolution of the modification and reinforcement techniques successfully employed in composite materials, yielding a class of materials that are harder than engineering ceramics and tougher than tool steel. Most importantly, for molten salt applications, HybriMet MMC materials enable us to sidestep the corrosion issues inherent in many superalloys.
This presentation reviews the development and testing of MMC in 750⁰C chloride, fluoride, and nitrate salts, including the design and utilization of novel salt-submerged tribology test fixtures. Corrosion, wear, erosion and mechanical data on MMC are presented. |
