| Abstract Scope |
The future of sustainable lunar infrastructure depends on manufacturing technologies capable of fabricating reliable structural components directly from lunar regolith through in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) while operating under the extreme thermal and environmental conditions of the lunar surface. Although laser-based manufacturing has demonstrated the feasibility of processing lunar regolith simulants, predictive computational frameworks capable of relating manufacturing parameters to material behavior and structural performance remain limited. This work presents a physics-informed thermomechanical modeling framework for laser-based manufacturing of lunar regolith under lunar-relevant conditions. The proposed framework integrates laser energy deposition, transient heat transfer, phase transformation, thermal gradient evolution, densification behavior, residual stress development, defect formation, and structural integrity within a unified finite element approach to establish process-structure-property relationships. The resulting predictive capability is expected to support process optimization, thermal management strategies, and the development of autonomous manufacturing technologies for future large-scale lunar infrastructure applications. |
