Abstract Scope |
In order to develop optimized scan strategies to manufacture complex shapes using laser sheet metal forming, it is critical to predict the extent of bending. Many thermal, analytical, and mechanical models have been put to this task; comparably little effort has been put towards the development of models with can predict the transition between the two most common mechanisms of bending—which bend in opposite directions under common processing conditions. This talk describes thermal and analytical modeling efforts, combined with a factorial experimental approach, to map the process space and mechanistic transition for laser forming thin sheets of AISI 304. This pilot effort for stainless steel will serve as a starting point to identify a “rule-of-thumb” predictor for the transition, as well as to develop a more optimized screening strategy for additional material systems and form factors. |
