| Abstract Scope |
The evolution of phase and microstructure influences the performance of paramagnetic alloys in demanding structural and functional environments, including fusion, cryogenic storage, and aerospace applications. Unlike conventional thermal or mechanical treatments, magnetic fields provide a contactless processing route that can influence phase and microstructure through element-specific enhanced diffusion, phase transformations, and electromagnetic interactions. This study examines static and cyclic high-magnetic fields as tools for modifying paramagnetic alloy systems during thermal treatment. Using the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory’s high magnetic field capabilities, stainless steel, titanium, and aluminum samples were thermally processed between 300 and 500°C under an external magnetic field. Static experiments used 30 T for 20 h, while cyclic experiments ramped up and down between 0 T to 30 T at 10 T/min for approximately 200 cycles. Post-processing diffraction and electron microscopy are compared with an analytical framework incorporating electromagnetic effects on phase and microstructural evolution. |
