This study explored the influence of Zn addition on texture evolution and grain boundary characteristics in Mg-Ca alloys, aiming to improve formability in magnesium systems. Binary Mg-0.35Ca and ternary Mg-0.35Ca-0.5Zn (wt.%) alloys were subjected to hot compression and static recrystallization. Their three-dimensional microstructures were analyzed using laboratory-scale X-ray diffraction contrast tomography (LabDCT). Through a five-parameter grain boundary analysis, we identified that Zn addition alters both the misorientation angle distribution and the grain boundary plane distribution (GBPD). Compared to Mg-Ca, the Mg-Ca-Zn alloy exhibited a weaker basal texture, reduced preference for {0001}-oriented boundaries, and more randomized grain boundary plane orientations. These changes suggest that Zn addition modifies grain boundary energy and mobility, potentially through solute segregation effects, thereby disrupting preferential grain growth. The results provide new insights into how non-rare-earth solute strategies can be employed to tailor recrystallization behavior and texture in Mg alloys for enhanced mechanical performance. |
