| Abstract Scope |
Targeted alpha therapy (TAT) has recently emerged as a promising experimental cancer treatment. Astatine-211 in particular, is an alpha-emitting radionuclide of high interest for clinical human trials but faces scarcity due to limited production capabilities. The University of Washington Medical Cyclotron Facilities (UWMCF) is one of the primary institutions responsible for 211At production, but a trade-off arises when increasing beam currents for higher yield results in thermal target breakdown. Fabrication via electrodeposition aims to produce thermally robust targets capable of withstanding higher beam energies.
The UWMCF fabricates targets comprised of an 80 μm bismuth film on a coin-shaped aluminum target holder which is water cooled during bombardment. Targets are typically manufactured by melting bismuth directly onto the target holder surface, which is then machined to proper thickness. Pulsed electrodeposition would allow for precise control of thin-film thickness, cycling between deposition and stripping of unwanted dendritic growth.
