| Abstract Scope |
SCC of biodegradable ZX10 and ZX00 was investigated using SSRTT in HBSS. The study aims to compare the susceptibility of both alloys to environmentally assisted cracking under simulated physiological conditions. Mechanical strength and ductility loss and fracture behavior were evaluated alongside corrosion characteristics to establish correlations between SCC susceptibility, microstructure, hardness, and corrosion rate. Quantification of stress corrosion cracks revealed distinct differences between the two alloys, witch crack volume fraction and propagation are strongly influenced by composition, microstructure and hardness. The crack volume fraction and locations are quantified by 3D-µCT. ZX00 exhibits comparatively improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking according to its high strength, attributed to its finer microstructure, higher hardness, and lower corrosion rate, but fails less ductile, also per duration. In contrast, ZX10 showed increased stress crack formation and ductility loss – even its more homogenous microstructure and its initial mechanical properties compromising better between strength and ductility. |
