| Abstract Scope |
Dealloying is an important corrosion process that contributes to alloy degradation and is widely utilized for the fabrication of nano-porous structures. Understanding vacancy generation and transport during dealloying is critical for elucidating defect-mediated microstructural evolution. In this work, we combine in situ TEM, four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and density functional theory (DFT) simulations to investigate vacancy distributions during vacuum dealloying of Cu-Zn alloys. The results reveal the dynamic evolution of vacancies and voids arising from the interplay between the thermodynamic driving force for dealloying and diffusion-limited kinetics. These findings establish an experimental framework for the quantification of vacancy at nanometer spatial resolution during metal dealloying and provide mechanistic insights into defect-mediated dealloying governing alloy degradation under extreme environments. |
