| Abstract Scope |
The growing demand for lightweight and cost-effective ballistic protection armor systems has intensified works on the possible use of natural sustainable materials as part of these systems. In this context, natural lignocellulosic fibers (NLFs) have emerged as important candidates to compose ballistic armor for personal protection. NLFs comparative low density, renewability and favorable specific mechanical properties have enabled their application as biocomposite reinforcement in multilayered armor system (MAS). Several studies demonstrated that biocomposites such as those incorporating jute, sisal hemp curaua and many others NLFs can exhibit competitive ballistic performance against conventional synthetic fibers like Aramid (Kevlar), in terms of bullet energy absorption and weight reduction. The present work reviews the main publications related to NLFs as reinforcement of biocomposites in MAS for personal protection. |
