| Abstract Scope |
There has been intense academic research and industrial application for decades about the ferromagnetic behavior of soft magnetic alloys, particularly, those based on amorphous alloys containing iron, nickel, or cobalt. By rapidly quenching from the melt, the amorphous or nanocrystalline laminations form which leads to high performance soft magnetic behavior, including high permeability, low coercivity, and lower core loss. By applying the different heat treatment on the as-cast ferromagnetic ribbon or designing the lamination/stacking arrangement, these soft magnetic behaviors can be finely tuned for the desired application. The intrinsic designable soft magnetic behavior gives flexibility to application engineers to fulfill their own application purpose, such as inductive components, transformers, motors, antennas and sensors. Metglas Inc. has been a world leading producer of amorphous metal ribbon since 1970. We will review the various grades of amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys that have been developed and their magnetic performances. We will also discuss the standardized magnetic test methods for these various alloys. |
