Abstract Scope Technetium volatility during waste vitrification necessitates a recycle loop or secondary solid waste disposal. In this study, rhenium (Re) was used as a non-radioactive surrogate for Tc in three different waste formulations where gibbsite and boehmite were used as the glass-forming alumina source in place of kyanite to investigate the Re incorporation process during vitrification. Each waste formulation was prepared at four Re concentrations to assess the impact of initial Re levels on single pass Re retention. Feed expansion tests and evolved gas analysis were used to evaluate the effects of alumina sources on temperature, composition, and quantity of the gasses evolved during vitrification. Additionally, phase characterization of heat-treated feeds was performed to analyze the formation of nanocrystalline alumina, which aids in retaining perrhenate-containing molten salt phases in the melt, thereby contributing to higher Re retention in the final glass product.
