Abstract Scope |
Wire arc additive manufacturing using variable bead width contour toolpath have shown great promise in generating toolpath achieving high dimensional accuracy while avoiding voids. However, existing contour toolpath planner does not take into account the printable bead width range in their toolpath generation. This is important for when printing parts with wedge like features, typical of propellers, leading to voids or overprinting. These degrade mechanical strength and print surface flatness required for reliable deposition of following layers. To address the issues identified, we proposed two modifications in toolpath planning. Firstly, a level-set method with mean curvature flow is chosen for toolpath smoothening. Secondly, achievable bead limits are enforced during the toolpath generation to ensure printability. An optimization process is done to select the best factor for the mean curvature, considering the generated path’s smoothness and estimated overlap. A sample geometry is then printed to compare the effects of the modifications. |
