He effects in reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steels have been extensively studied using ion irradiation, including He implantation, and neutron irradiation of B- or Ni-doped steels. At low irradiation temperatures (<625 K), the presence of He could lead to pronounced additional hardening and embrittlement, which can significantly affect the structural integrity of water-cooled in vessel components in DT fusion reactor environments. The extent to which these effects become significant during reactor operation has been a key concern.
This presentation reviews a series of studies on He effects on microstructural evolution and mechanical property changes in irradiated F82H, the Japanese RAFM steel. Results from post irradiation microstructural observations and mechanical property evaluations, including nanoindentation and micro tensile testing, are presented. Together with theoretical considerations, the mechanisms of He induced irradiation effects are systematically discussed. |
