| Abstract Scope |
Wire laser directed energy deposition (L-DED) is advantageous for in-space manufacturing due to its microgravity tolerance and elimination of toxicity and flammability hazards. However, conventional L-DED relies on compositionally rigid solid wires, severely limiting the material flexibility demanded for extraterrestrial fabrication and repair. To resolve this bottleneck, this study pioneers the integration of multi-material stranded-wire feedstocks into the L-DED process. Investigating binary (Fe-Ni) and ternary (Fe-Ni-Cr) alloy systems known for their exceptional thermo-mechanical properties, this research evaluates buildability using operando high-speed x-ray imaging coupled with post-build microstructural characterization. Specifically, this study demonstrates how optimizing geometric stranding parameters prevents the partial melting of individual strands to ensure high-fidelity builds. Furthermore, it highlights methods to drive elemental homogenization by introducing localized heat-zone overlaps via an oscillatory wiggle deposition strategy. Ultimately, this work provides fundamental insights into stranded-wire L-DED integration, establishing a pathway to fabricate high-performance, multicomponent alloys on demand for space infrastructure. |
