The crystallographic phase behavior of the FeNi system is unusually complex for a system with broad FCC solid solubility, and the small differences in free energy between multiple competing phases makes it highly sensitive to dilute alloying additions. This study examines near-equiatomic FeNi alloys with dilute (<1 at.%) phosphorus additions, focusing on phase transformations and lattice distortion. The improved pseudo-binary phase diagram of (FeNi)-0.5 at.% P reveals the presence of phase transformations in regions previously predicted to be single-phase FCC. This includes the formation of an unreported tetragonal phase with a slight lattice distortion (c/a ≈ 1.005) that appears closely tied to formation of the (FeNi)3P phosphide phase, which is most pronounced near equiatomic compositions. These observations highlight the role of phosphorus in inducing non-cubic distortions and provide new insight into crystallographic behavior in Fe-Ni-P alloys for advanced magnetic material development. |
