| Abstract Scope |
In order to support the future use of additively manufactured (AM) parts fabricated from Inconel 718 in Generation IV nuclear reactor systems, advanced non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques must be proposed, assessed, and validated. The sideband peak counting (SPC) technique is a quick and cost-effective NDE method that leverages the nonlinear acoustic effects originating from local defects and other microstructural characteristics generated during an AM process to help evaluate overall material and mechanical properties. In this investigation, we study the efficacy of this SPC technique coupled with laser ultrasonics testing (LUT) to characterize AM-generated defects and microstructural characteristics in Inconel 718 fabricated using the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing process before and after heat treatment. The efficacy of this innovative NDE technique is compared with results obtained from examinations of the same specimens utilizing X-ray Computed Tomography and other advanced microscopy analysis techniques. |
