| Abstract Scope |
Deformation- and impact-based consolidation of hard particles is desirable for advanced materials processing but remains challenging due to the limited plasticity of hard powder particles. One promising strategy to address this challenge is to coat hard particles with a softer metallic shell, forming core-shell metal matrix composites (MMCs) that facilitate deformability. In this work, we systematically investigate the processing and bonding science of core-shell particles produced by two distinct routes. Specifically, two synthesis routes were explored: intermittent electro-deposition, a wet-chemical method and ball milling-annealing cycles, a mechanical-alloying technique. This allows us to examine how metal chemistry and the synthesis route affect interfacial diffusion and shell growth. Additionally, the synthesized core-shell particles were launched onto metal substrates at high velocities using a laser induced microprojectile impact testing setup. The bonding mechanisms and post impact shell condition of the different composites were examined and compared. |
