The overall performance and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are largely governed by the complex dynamics of the interphases formed at the electrode-electrolyte interface on micro and nano scale. Henceforth, thorough investigation is crucial for the in-depth understanding of LIB’s behaviour in certain operating condition. In this work, graphite|NMC 622 cells are investigated in fast-charged conditions with a modified electrolyte using KPF6 additive to improve the fast chargeability, thereby minimising the degradations occurring within the cell. Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was conducted to investigate the Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on the cycled anodes with modified electrolytes. The presence of lithium fluoride (LiF) and absence of potassium fluoride (KF) - related secondary ions in SIMS spectra confirms the enhancement of LiF within the SEI due to KPF6 additive incorporation - which leads to LiF-rich, robust, and low-resistance interphase, significantly improving Li⁺ transport, enabling the rapid ion mobility required for fast-charging performance. |
