Abstract Scope |
Molten Metal Deposition (MMD) is a novel wire-based metal additive manufacturing (AM) technique optimized for aluminium alloys. It enables direct wire melting onto a heated substrate without auxiliary energy sources such as lasers or binders, reducing thermal stresses and enabling the processing of high-strength alloys (6xxx–7xxx). Due to aluminium’s high thermal conductivity and MMD’s inherently low heat input, the process is more sensitive to local parameters and part dimensions. This study investigates the relationship between local process measurements (e.g., nozzle temperature) and the metallurgical and dimensional quality of interlayer fusion. Grain size and intermetallic particle evolution along the build height are mapped and correlated with infrared thermography measurements. Results show consistent changes with height, linked to variations in heat transfer. These insights are critical for implementing predictive process control, allowing dynamic parameter adjustments to maintain constant metallurgical quality and ensure uniform material properties across MMD-produced components. |
