Abstract Scope |
Earth’s polar regions pose unique challenges to engineering materials including ice accretion, repeated freeze/thaw cycles, and low temperature thermal shock. Protective coatings, such as chromium nitride (CrN), are commonly employed to resist wear, corrosion, and weathering in extreme service conditions. For use in arctic environments, these coatings must not only withstand the unique cold region environmental stressors but, ideally, should also impart additional functionality to surfaces such as reduced ice adhesion, delayed frost formation, and controlled friction against ice. In this work, the phase composition and architecture of CrN-based coatings were systematically varied to elucidate the relationships between coating microstructure, coating responses to arctic environmental conditions, and coating tribological performance. The results obtained from this work can be applied to the design of coatings tailored for tribological applications in extreme cold environments. |
