| Abstract Scope |
Nickel–phosphorus (Ni–P) coatings are attractive; however, for challenging applications, improvements in their properties are essential. To meet these objectives, the properties of Ni-P coatings have been improved by reinforcing the Ni-P matrix with hard ceramic Niobium Carbide (NbC) particles. Structural and compositional analysis confirm the formation of phase-pure composite coatings exhibiting a semi-crystalline structure. The addition of NbC particles leads to gradual grain refinement due to heterogeneous nucleation. The incorporation of NbC particles in the Ni-P matrix contributed to a gradual improvement in Tribo-Mechanical properties, which can be attributed to the phenomenon of dispersion hardening. Similarly, an improvement in corrosion resistance is observed with increasing amounts of NbC particles. This improvement can be attributed to the reduction in active area and pore filling due to NbC particles. Finally, the COMSOL simulations successfully reveal the current distribution and the development of coating thickness over time during the electrodeposition process. |
