| Abstract Scope |
Cold spray adhesion is challenging when soft metals like copper are deposited onto hard substrates like steel, due to hardness mismatch and limited substrate deformation. One strategy uses composite bond coats combining soft and hard powders, where higher hard powder content is expected to improve substrate bonding and adhesion.
In prior work, copper coatings were deposited onto steel using Cu-Fe bond coats with varying feedstock ratios. Scratch adhesion improved with iron content, from 0.1 N for pure copper to 0.4 N at 50% iron, attributed to co-deformation and an interconnected Cu-Fe network enhancing stiffness.
Ongoing work will produce thicker coatings for quantitative pull-off testing. Particle and substrate deformation will be characterized via SEM and nanohardness measurements. Pure copper and Cu–Fe bond coat configurations will be fabricated with and without laser assistance. This will evaluate bond coat performance relative to laser-assisted deposition and assess potential synergy between the two strategies. |
