| Abstract Scope |
Single particle impact testing has become a remarkable source of fundamental knowledge about the unit processes of cold spray coating, from initial adhesion, to the improvement of bonding, to the onset of surface damage and erosion. However, cold spray is ultimately a process involving many particle impacts in sequence, and this talk will review our initial studies that have used single-particle testing in a serial mode to explore the role of sequential impacts. At the N = 2 level, such work speaks to the hypothesis about “peening” as a means of increasing bonding, and to the role of surface topography upon the adhesion transition. At the N > 2 level, added to these effects are new mechanisms of erosion related to fracture. All of these multi-particle phenomena speak to the need for deposition velocities well above those required to adhere a single particle alone. |
