Abstract Scope |
The secondary nucleation of aluminium hydroxide remains less understood in continuous crystallisation despite its influence on particle size distribution. Secondary nucleation can occur via surface nucleation, embryo coagulation and attrition. In this paper, we outline these mechanisms and examine secondary nucleation through the concept of the metastable zone width (MSZW)—the concentration range where supersaturation exists without spontaneous nucleation. MSZW is key to understanding and modelling nucleation behaviour, especially in seeded systems. Finally, we discuss prospects for controlling secondary nucleation to tailor the particle size of aluminium hydroxide. |
