| Abstract Scope |
Microstructure evolution during thermo-mechanical processing of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys depends critically on the migration of interfaces. Alloying elements affect interface migration rates either through solute drag or particle pinning. Here, a combined approach of experimental studies and multi-scale simulations is presented to gain new insight into alloying strategies that will be illustrated for grain growth and phase transformations in low-carbon steels and titanium alloys. The experimental studies include in-situ microstructure measurements using laser ultrasonics. Atomistic scale simulations are combined with phase field modelling as well as state-variable approaches to model microstructure evolution with an emphasis on interface properties. An outlook will be provided regarding the challenges and opportunities of the proposed interface based alloy design approach. |
