| Abstract Scope |
Corrosion of structural alloys is one of the major challenges in molten chloride salt reactors. The reduction potential of an ideal redox buffer should lie below the Cr/CrCl2 potential to suppress chromium dissolution while remaining above the U/UCl3 potential to prevent uranium precipitation. The TiCl3/TiCl2/Ti three-phase equilibrium has recently been proposed as a redox buffer because it satisfies these thermodynamic requirements. However, its practical application is limited because TiCl2 is not commercially available and requires in-situ preparation, making implementation in practical molten salt systems challenging. In this study, the Mn/MnCl2 redox couple is proposed as an alternative redox buffer for molten chloride salts. Corrosion experiments using SS316 immersed in NaCl–KCl–MgCl2 containing MnCl2 and metallic Mn are being conducted to evaluate its effectiveness. This work aims to demonstrate the feasibility of the Mn/MnCl2 redox buffer as a practical corrosion mitigation strategy for molten chloride salt reactors. |
