| Abstract Scope |
The rapid growth of grid-scale energy storage systems and electric vehicles has increased the need for computational tools that accurately predict lithium-ion battery behavior. Battery performance is governed by coupled processes including lithium transport, electrochemical kinetics, and phase transformations, all strongly influenced by electrode microstructure. This work presents BESFEM, an open-source Battery Electrode Simulation toolkit based on the Finite Element Method for physics-based simulation of battery electrodes. The Smoothed Boundary Method enables direct simulation of complex microstructures without body-conforming meshes, while supporting multiple interacting particles and materials allows investigation of blended electrode chemistries. BESFEM incorporates volume expansion for electrode materials that undergo significant microstructural evolution. This work studies silicon, which offers a theoretical capacity nearly an order of magnitude greater than graphite but undergoes up to 300% volume expansion during lithiation, substantially altering transport pathways and reaction kinetics. BESFEM investigates structure-performance relationships and guides the design of next-generation battery electrodes. |
